Do I have to currently be a Licensed Athlete?
Yes, only individuals who are licensed at the time of registration by a sports Federation are eligible to participate in the Athlete’s Program. This requirement may be subject to checks at any time. This is why, during the registration process, we ask the athlete to provide us with the sport and Federation with whom he/she is licensed. If you are not a Licensed Athlete but you are interested in participating, see next FAQ.
I am not a Licensed Athlete but I am interested in participating. What can I do?
While this program is for licensed athletes, the Registry (entity in charge of the .sport extension) may exceptionally allow participation of non-licensed athletes into this Program on a case-by-case basis. If you are interested you should contact them at athletes@gaisf.sport.
Am I going to lose my .sport domain name and webpage when I stop being licensed?
No. This requirement is only necessary at the time of registration. Afterwards you (athlete) can renew your domain name even if you are no longer a licensed athlete. If you let the domain expire, however, you will not be able to register it again unless you are a licensed athlete at the time of the second or subsequent registrations.
Can an underaged Licensed Athlete participate?
Yes, but if you are below the age of 16 at the time of registration, the administrative contact of your domain name must be one of your legal guardians.
What does this price include?
This price includes the use of the Web Content Editor to manage your .sport website, the NameofAthlete.sport and the hosting of the .sport webpage for 1 year. After this, you may renew the service for USD 25/year.
Do I get my money back if the domain I choose is not available or my application is rejected?
Yes. Once you finalize the registration process, the domain name you have chosen will be reviewed. This is for the athlete’s own security to avoid third parties stealing your identity. If the domain name is available and it complies with the name selection and other requirements of this program, it will be activated. If not, the domain will not be allowed but, of course, you will get a full refund of the amount paid. In all cases, you will receive a notification informing you of whether the domain has been activated or not.
Can I choose any name.sport?
No. The name selected must be available and must consist of ONE OF THE BELOW:
- The athlete’s full legal name (e.g. JamesSmithPereira.sport);
- The athlete’s abbreviated name containing at least parts of his/her first and family name/s (e.g. JamesSmith.sport, JSmith.sport, JamesS.sport);
- Variations of the athlete’s name (such as the informal or shortened form of the legal name) containing parts of his/her first and/or family name/s (e.g. JimSmith.sport, JimmySmith.sport, JimmyS.sport); or
- A combination containing a), b) or c) above AND the athlete’s position, category of player, player’s number, nickname, or other information in connection with your sporting activity (e.g. JimSmith11.sport, James11.sport, SmithGuard11.sport, MagicSmith.sport).
Can the .sport domain name be the athlete’s nickname?
Not alone, but it can be the athlete’s nickname plus the athlete’s full or abbreviated name (e.g. MagicSmith.sport). If you have questions and want to make sure, you can ask us in the Help Center below.
Can the .sport domain name be an abbreviation of the athlete’s name?
Yes, it can be the athlete’s abbreviated name containing at least parts of the athlete’s first and family name/s (e.g. JamesSmith.sport, JSmith.sport, JamesS.sport). If you have questions and want to make sure, you can ask us in the Help Center below.
Can the .sport domain name be a fantasy name?
No. Unlike other internet extensions, where the domains are registered on a first come first served basis, the .sport ecosystem wants to be a protected and secure place. For the athlete’s own safety, the athlete’s identity is verified before granting a .sport domain name and can also be re-verified at any time later.
Can I redirect mydomain.sport to another Internet extension (such as .com or another)?
No. The athlete’s program is a subsidised program which allows licensed athlete’s to use .sport domains at a much lower price than the standard one with the condition that it shows a genuine use of the .sport ecosystem. Redirecting the domain to another extension (for example a .com domain) would frustrate this purpose.
Do I have to place content in my .sport website?
Yes. The .sport domain must display at the very least some basic sport related content. Therefore, it cannot return an error or empty page.
Do I have to place content in my .sport website right away?
Your .sport website must include sport content within a reasonable period of time from the moment of the registration. This will happen automatically by using the Web Content Editor we provide.
Can I place non-sports related content?
No, unless it is completely secondary to the main content of the page, which must be content related to your sporting activities.
